If a 18-year-old is lawfully old enough to get a tattoo, why do some tattoo craftsmen turn them down when they request one on their face?
I had some 18-year old kid in my apartment the other day doing some training with the maintenance crew as they were installing smart devices on the entire floor like an assembly line.He asked me how long it took me to get my sleeve on my left arm done.
My response?11 years.
I think he was referring to hoursu2026 then he said he was going to get not one,but TWO sleeves this year.Keep in mind,he had zero tattoos.
There were literally 5 of us grown men in the room, all with years and hundreds of hours of tattoo work - and we all erupted in laughter in unison.
I told him it was quite ambitious, and pointed out a Koi on my arm that took 8 hours of work all on its own.I suggested he start with one part of one sleeve and grow from there, just like I did.
At 36,I have just over 90 hours of ink on my body, and I spent some time in my early twenties as a tattoo artist.
I preferred doing large, custom pieces that took multiple sessions.Art that had years of thought and commitment put into it.
That said,I refused service to a lot of people.I refused service to people who were drunk or obviously high.I refused service to people who tried to get free work.I refused service to people who didn't pay up front. And I refused service to 18-year old kids who came in on their birthday to get some dumb little design I knew they would regret later.
90% of the people I turned down were the latteru2026 18-year old kids who haven't thought about their future.
Thank me later when you are actually able to find decent job.
